The Power of Nostalgia in Design

I've been thinking about how a single treasured memory can spark a series of visual and emotional associations. It all began with my fascination for sun-bleached colours. These are hues that seem to have been left out in the hot sun for years, much like a faded curtain hanging against a window.

And somehow, this unlocked a beautiful memory.

One I hadn't thought about in many years, if ever. I often find it challenging to recall childhood memories, which makes this one feel even more precious.

A Glimpse into the Past

The memory is simple yet profound: the strong Australian winter sun streaming through the large windows of a sunroom in my childhood home. I'm perched on the windowsill, watching my mum read a book and sip a cup of tea.

The feeling of that moment is quiet, calm, and toasty warm. (A small side note: I did not grow up in a particularly quiet or calm house!)

Yet this moment remains etched in my mind. The warmth, the sunlight filtering through the windows, and the sense of peace are all part of it.

Influencing My Work

This feeling has quietly found its way into my work through washed-out colours and sun-bleached edges. It is influencing a new collection that is beginning to take shape.

At first, I thought this pull towards warmth was a little odd in the middle of winter. Then I realized: I'm no longer in the depths of a London winter. Australian winters are so much kinder, gentler, and, well, warmer.

The Imperfect Home

This brings me back to the idea of the imperfect home. Our "sunroom" was anything but grand. But this deeply held memory has cast it in a different light. I can see and feel that exact moment in all its simple glory.

The homes I remember most aren't the perfect ones.

They're the ones attached to a feeling. The warmth of winter sunshine. A favourite reading corner. A room that feels uniquely your own.

Creating a Unique Collection

That's the feeling I hope to bring to this new collection. I want to evoke those warm, inviting memories that make a house feel like a home.

Embracing Whimsical Elegance

In my designs, I strive to blend whimsical elegance with functionality. Each piece tells a story, inviting you to create your own memories. Whether it's a cushion that adds a pop of colour or wallpaper that transforms a room, I want every design to resonate with warmth.

The Journey Ahead

As I continue this journey, I am excited to explore more memories and inspirations. Each design will reflect a piece of my heart, inviting you to embrace your own stories.

In the end, it’s all about connection.

The memories we cherish shape our spaces and our lives. I hope my new collection will inspire you to create your own unique decor that resonates with warmth and nostalgia.

Let’s celebrate the beauty of our imperfect homes together!
